About John Hardy

Learn About the brand

1975, In the heart of Bali, where temple bells chime and incense wafts through the air, a young Canadian art student, John Hardy, was captivated by the island's serene beauty. Drawn to its vibrant culture, he immersed himself in the island's rich traditions, learning ancient jewelry-making techniques from a master artisan, a descendant of the goldsmiths of Balinese royalty.

These techniques, including rantai (woven chain), tenun (woven mesh), jawan (granulation), and ukiran (cut work), became the foundation of John Hardy's signature designs. The company was officially founded in 1989, and from the outset, it was clear that John Hardy was not just about creating jewelry. It was about preserving the Balinese heritage, respecting nature, and building a sustainable future. The brand's commitment to the environment is evident in its use of 100% reclaimed silver since 2012 and its dedication to planting bamboo seedlings for every piece purchased from the Bamboo Collection.

But John's connection to Bali went beyond craftsmanship. He saw the potential in the Balinese community, initiating the "Jobs For Life" program. This initiative wasn't just about employment; it was about empowering young girls, ensuring they had access to education and a promising future.

But what truly sets John Hardy apart is the brand's dedication to handcrafted artistry. Every piece of jewelry tells a story, both inside and out. The designs are inspired by nature's curves and the forms of flora and fauna. It can take anywhere from three to ten months to complete a piece, as everything is meticulously crafted by hand, ready to be passed down from generation to generation.

In 2007, John and his wife, Cynthia Hardy, took a step back from the company to focus on building a more sustainable world through education and design. They founded the Green School in Bali, an institution dedicated to delivering pioneering education with a curriculum that integrates traditional subjects, creative arts, and green studies.

The John Hardy brand has expanded globally, with a recent boutique opening in Seminyak, Bali. This new space is more than just a store; it's an immersive community oasis that showcases the brand's history, artistry, and commitment to sustainability. The boutique offers an interactive experience, allowing visitors to engage with artisans, participate in workshops, and even create custom jewelry pieces.

John Hardy is not just a jewelry designer or a brand. It's a movement, a philosophy, and a testament to the power of artistry, sustainability, and community. Through its unique designs, commitment to the environment, and deep respect for Balinese culture, John Hardy has etched an indelible mark in the world of luxury jewelry.
