About Jomaz

Learn About the brand

In New York City during the late 1920s, brothers Joseph and Lincoln Mazer began building a name in costume jewelry, wanting to create pieces that looked and felt like luxury jewels but could be afforded by anyone. Their venture quickly gained attention, and the name Mazer became associated with stylish, well-made jewelry.

By 1946, Joseph decided to establish his own path. He founded a new company under the name Jomaz, marking his designs with a signature that distinguished his work. This step allowed him to pursue a vision that combined artistry with accessibility. Jomaz soon became known for jewelry that mirrored the richness of fine pieces while remaining within reach of the middle class.

The company’s strength lay in its design. Jomaz often used two-tone metal effects and textured metalwork to create depth, and cabochons appeared frequently, an uncommon choice in costume jewelry. Their pieces were bold, often featuring large square cut stones, and many carried the glamour of the 1940s well into later decades. During this era, cocktail-style jewelry was especially popular, with large stones set in gold-plated silver, a style known as vermeil.

Jomaz was also a place where design talent thrived. Marcel Boucher helped shape the early collections before building his own career, and in the 1950s André Fleuridas brought a modernist edge. Later decades saw contributions from figures such as Thierry Mugler and Sandra Miller, each adding new character to the line.

At gatherings in the 1940s, Jomaz jewelry captured the attention of entire rooms. The pieces reflected light in a way that made them look as if they belonged to a world of fine jewels, yet they were accessible to women who dreamed of glamour without the cost of precious stones. Jomaz succeeded by offering jewelry that felt both elegant and attainable.

Although production ended in 1981, the legacy of Jomaz remains alive among collectors and vintage enthusiasts. Their work is still recognized for its craftsmanship and inventive designs, each piece carrying with it the spirit of the era in which it was created.
