As a teenager, Stephen's destiny was set into motion during a visit to the Medway College of Design in Rochester, England. The glint of gold, the allure of gemstones, and the intricate dance of design consumed him. Under the mentorship of Tony Shepherd, a former Prime Warden of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, Stephen honed his craft, eventually earning the privilege of setting the prestigious De Beers Diamond Stakes Trophy, not once but twice.
Stephen's talent and ambition soon took him across the Atlantic to Banff, a picturesque town nestled in Canada's Rocky Mountains. Here, he worked for Mike Ridding, a passionate mineral enthusiast and adventurer. This experience helped him cultivate his unique and bold style, with a brave use of colorful, exotic gems. But it was the sun-kissed shores of Santa Barbara, California, with its freethinking and fashion-savvy clientele, that truly tested his mettle. It was here that he had his first brush with celebrity fame, when Hollywood royalty Elizabeth Taylor, walked into the Silverhorn store and left with one of his creations. Over the years, icons like Madonna, Ozzy Osbourne, Steven Tyler, Sir Elton John, and many more have adorned themselves in Stephen Webster's designs.
In 1989, with a wealth of experience and a clear vision, Stephen returned to London and established Stephen Webster Ltd. The brand, redefined luxury jewelry, becoming a beacon of innovation, blending traditional British craftsmanship with audacious design. With inspirations ranging from the quirks of English culture, American iconography, wildlife, literature, theatre, to pop culture. This eclectic mix, combined with his commitment to ethically sourced materials, set him apart in the contemporary jewelry world.
Awards and accolades naturally followed, including the "British Luxury Jeweler of the Year Award" three times, "Diamond Jeweler of the Year", "Jeweler Designer of the Year", and "UK Jewelry Brand of the Year". In 2007, he was honored with a Master of Arts degree from the University of Creative Arts for his outstanding contribution to the arts. Further recognition came in January 2013 when he was awarded an MBE for his services to training and skills in the British Jewelry Industry.
Throughout his career, Stephen's genius was recognized and celebrated, but beyond the glitz and glamour, he has remained committed to ethical craftsmanship, championing ethically sourced material, traveling to mines in Tanzania and Peru, ensuring that the precious materials he used were sourced responsibly. As well as becoming an ambassador for Fairtrade and Fairmined Gold and collaborating closely with Forevermark Diamonds.
Today, Stephen Webster stands tall as one of the international scene's most accomplished and exciting designers. With flagship stores in London and Beverly Hills, his designs are sought after worldwide.
