Celebrate Your Uniqueness: Understanding the Significance of Birthstones
Author:
The Team

Birthstones have held cultural importance for centuries, symbolizing our connection to a particular month and carrying special significance for those born during that time. Jewelry featuring one's birthstone is a popular way to celebrate our unique individuality and personal style.

My fascination with birthstones began when my mother gave me an emerald ring for my (May) birthday. Leading me down the rabbit hole, where I discovered the rich tapestry of myths, legends, and beliefs from around the world, all woven around these precious gems.

In this blog post, we will delve into the captivating origins, legends, and cultural meanings of birthstones. We’ll discuss different birthstone associations, including modern, Zodiac, mystical, Ayurvedic, and Siamese birthstones, and provide guidance on selecting the right birthstone jewelry and maintaining its sparkle for years to come.

Whether you're a jewelry aficionado or simply intrigued by the significance and history of birthstones, join me as we explore the fascinating world of birthstones.

The Origins and Legends of Birthstones

Birthstone traditions vary by culture, but one origin story dates back to the breastplate of Aaron, a sacred garment worn by the high priest of the Israelites, as described in the Bible's book of Exodus. This breastplate featured 12 precious stones, each representing one of the 12 tribes of Israel. Over time, people started associating specific stones with each of the 12 months based on astrological and mystical beliefs.

Different cultures and religions have their own unique birthstone traditions. For example, ancient Indian astrology includes nine gemstones, each corresponding to one of the nine planets. In the Middle Ages, it was believed that wearing one's birthstone during its associated month would bring good fortune and protect against harm.

Birthstones have been attributed to healing properties and mystical powers throughout history. For instance, the ancient Greeks believed that amethysts protected against drunkenness, while Persians thought sapphires cured eye diseases.

The American National Association of Jewelers established a standard list of birthstones in 1912, which has been revised several times, most recently in 2002. While the traditional list remains popular, many now also choose to wear modern, Zodiac, mystical, Ayurvedic, or Siamese birthstones, each with its own unique history and significance.

Modern Birthstones

The modern birthstone list gained popularity and was eventually adopted worldwide. Why do some months have extra birthstones? While it would make sense that there be 12 birthstones (one for each month), some months have multiple approved stones. This is because, over the years, some of the stones were considered to be difficult to obtain, expensive, or just no longer stylish. So more reasonable stones have been added in to fit a wider audience appeal. Even still, these added stones are believed to have special properties and are associated with different personality traits, characteristics, and birth months.

What is my birthstone? Here is a detailed description of each modern birthstone:

  1. January - Garnet:
This stone symbolizes purity, truth, and faithfulness. It comes in various colors, with deep red being the most widely recognized.

  2. February - Amethyst:
Representing peace, serenity, and mental clarity, this stone is typically purple but can also be found in shades of pink (rose quartz) and green (prasiolite, also known as greened amethyst).

  3. March - Aquamarine or Bloodstone:
Aquamarine symbolizes courage, creativity, and self-expression, while bloodstone is believed to promote good health and protect from harm. Aquamarine is typically light blue or bluish-green, while bloodstone is dark green with red spots.

  4. April - Diamond:
Known for their hardness and scratch resistance, diamonds represent strength, purity, and everlasting love. They are primarily colorless or with hints of yellow, but can come in a range of colors.

Pearls and Moonstones are usually white but can range from browns, grays, and creams, while Alexandrite is a rare color-changing gemstone, appearing green in sunlight (or fluorescent light), to purple in incandescent light (or candlelight/firelight).

  7. July – Ruby:
This stone is associated with passion, love, and prosperity. It is always red in color, but can also have slight shades of purple or orange.

  8. August – Peridot or Spinel:

  9. September - Sapphire:
Signifying wisdom, truth, and faithfulness, sapphires are usually blue but can be found in almost any color, including colorless.

  10. October – Opal or Tourmaline:
Opal symbolizes creativity, inspiration, and self-expression, while tourmaline represents strength, protection, and love. Opal can come in a range of colors, though mostly white, gray and black, while tourmaline can range come in just about any color, with the most commonly seen being green, pink and black.

  11. November – Topaz or Citrine:
Topaz represents love and affection and is usually blue or yellow in color. Citrine is said to bring joy, prosperity, and success, and is yellow or orangy-yellow in color.

  12. December – Turquoise or Tanzanite:

Understanding the symbolism and significance of each modern birthstone can help you choose the perfect piece of jewelry for yourself or as a gift for someone special.

In the kingdom of Siam (modern-day Thailand), certain gemstones and colored fabrics were considered to be ideal for wearing on different days of the week. This list of stones has existed since at least the end of the 19th century when the name ‘Siam’ was officially adopted by the region, but its true age is unknown.

The tradition of Siamese birthstones originated from the cultural belief in astrology and the impact that celestial bodies have on people's lives. As well as the ancient Indian system of Jyotish, which is still widely used today.

Each day of the week is associated with a specific color and gemstone, as follows:

  2. Monday – Moonstone:

  3. Tuesday – Coral:

Cat's Eye is linked to good fortune, courage, and protection. It is believed to enhance intuition and bring success in business and education.

  5. Thursday – Emerald:
Emerald is a symbol of loyalty, friendship, and love. It is believed to enhance mental and emotional balance and promote spiritual growth.

  6. Friday – Diamond:
Diamond is a symbol of strength, purity, and eternal love. It is believed to enhance creativity and bring good fortune and success.

  7. Saturday – Sapphire:
Sapphire is associated with wisdom, truth, and good fortune. It is believed to enhance mental clarity and promote spiritual growth.

It’s still common in Thailand for people to wear gemstones and fabrics of the corresponding colors on each day of the week. The tradition is also celebrated in many Thai festivals and ceremonies, where people wear traditional clothing and accessories featuring Siamese birthstones.

  • Store your jewelry in a clean and dry place. Keeping your jewelry in a box or an individually in a jewelry pouch will protect it from scratches and other damage.

  • Avoid exposing your jewelry to chemicals. Even household cleaners, perfumes, and lotions can cause stones to lose their luster. Make sure to apply any lotions, perfumes, or hairspray BEFORE putting on your jewelry.

  • Clean your birthstone jewelry regularly. Using a soft brush, mild soap, and warm water, gently scrub the jewelry and rinse any soap residue off with lukewarm water. Be sure to thoroughly dry your pieces afterward, with a soft, clean cloth.
