Unveiling Emerald Treatments: Enhancing Beauty or Misleading Buyers

Emeralds, with their rich green hues, have captivated hearts for millennia. As one of the “big 4 of precious gemstones”, they will always be a popular choice for jewelry. Ranging from deep, dark green to lighter shades with a hint of blue or yellow, emeralds are a symbol of elegance and sophistication. However, due to their fragile nature and abundance of unique natural inclusions, they often undergo various treatments to enhance their beauty and durability. How do I know if my emerald is treated? As a gemstone enthusiast and an emerald expert, I believe it's crucial for those considering emerald jewelry to understand the different treatments available and their implications.

In this blog post, we will delve into the world of emerald treatments and discuss the various methods employed to improve the appearance of these enchanting gemstones. By understanding the various treatments, you can make informed decisions when purchasing emerald jewelry and ensure that you are investing in a piece that is both beautiful and authentic.

So, whether you're considering an emerald engagement ring or a stunning necklace, this post will be your go-to guide for understanding the intricacies of emerald treatments.

Types of Emerald Treatments:

To make informed decisions when purchasing emerald jewelry, it's important to understand the various treatments that can be applied to emeralds, these treatments can be categorized into two main types: filling treatments, and enhancement treatments. In this section, we will discuss each type in detail, exploring how they affect the appearance of emeralds and the disclosure requirements for each method.

Filling Treatments

  • Oiling: Are emeralds usually treated? Oiling is a common, industry-accepted, treatment for emeralds that helps improve their overall appearance by reducing the visibility of the surface-reaching micro fractures or fissures inherent to emerald crystals. This treatment involves immersing the emerald in a colorless oil (usually 100% natural cedar oil) which penetrates even the smallest cracks and imperfections, making them less visible to the eye (it is important to note that oiling is not permanent and may need to be repeated over time). This is by far the most common/popular emerald treatment, and the vast majority of emeralds on the market today have been oiled to some degree. In fact, if an emerald isn’t oiled, the price increases substantially, often accompanied by a certification from a reputable independent gem lab, and is typically seen in only the best of the best emeralds.

Since this treatment is overwhelmingly common and accepted across the industry, enhances the NATURAL beauty of the stone, is reversible, and doesn’t misleadingly boost the value of the stone (like many of the other treatments on this list), it often is not disclosed unless the stone was heavily oiled, if the customer specifically requests to know if a particular emerald was oiled, or if testing was done by a reputable 3rd party gem lab to determine potential treatments. Reputable jewelers, to maintain transparency with their customers, may have a general statement about industry-accepted/widescale treatments, and of course, will disclose any known oiling if asked.

  • Natural Tree Resin: Another method used to improve the appearance of emeralds is by filling surface-reaching fractures with natural tree resins (like those from Canada balsam), which have a refractive index close to that of emerald. This process helps to conceal the fractures and enhances the overall clarity of the gemstone. As with oiling, the commonality and acceptance of this treatment often leads to non-disclosure unless specifically asked, or unless the jeweler has a general statement about industry-accepted/widescale treatments.

  • Dyeing: This less common treatment for emeralds involves applying colored dyes either to the surface of the gemstone, to the oil used during the oiling treatment, or to the filler material used during fracture-filling treatment. The dye artificially enhances the color of the emerald, misleading buyers into purchasing a lower-quality emerald than what they are paying for. This treatment is considered deceptive unless disclosed, as it can significantly impact the value of the gemstone. It is crucial that the presence of dyes is disclosed by the seller, as it can affect the overall worth of the emerald. To determine if your emerald has been dyed, it is best to either avoid the issue completely, by buying from a reputable dealer, or by having your emerald tested for treatments by a 3rd party gem lab.

Like with dying treatment, all the remaining treatments on this list must be disclosed by the seller, as these treatments can significantly impact the value and/or durability of the emerald. There is nothing wrong with buying emeralds with these treatments, as they fill an important niche in the jewelry world, and many people like the appeal of getting a fantastic looking emerald for a fraction of the price of what you would normally have to pay. The important thing is DISCLOSURE from the seller and that the price reflects that the stone has been treated to artificially improve the clarity, durability, and/or color.

  • Fracture-filled Emeralds: Fracture-filling is a treatment that involves injecting a filler material, with a similar refractive index to emerald, into the cracks and fissures to enhance its clarity, hide inclusions, and drastically boost the overall appearance of the gem. This treatment can be performed using various materials such as Opticon filler, epoxy resins, glass, plastics, etc. Disclosure is necessary when selling fracture-filled emeralds, as these treatments can impact their long-term appearance and value.

Other/Enhancing Treatments Types

  • Irradiation: This treatment involves exposing emeralds to ionizing radiation to alter or enhance their color. This process can create deeper, more intense shades of green, making the emerald more desirable. However, this treatment is fairly uncommon, and generally less accepted in the gemstone industry, as it can produce unstable colors that may fade over time. Disclosure of irradiation treatment is essential, as it can significantly impact the value, and longevity of the color of the emerald.

  • Heat Treatment: This is another enhancement method used to improve the color and in some cases, clarity of emeralds. This process involves exposing the gemstone to high temperatures, in a controlled environment, to alter its color. While heat treatment is more commonly used for other gemstones (such as sapphire and rubies), it is occasionally applied to emeralds, especially those with a strong blue or yellow tint. This treatment can affect the stability and value of the gemstone, making disclosure vital when selling heat-treated emeralds.

Understanding the various emerald treatments is crucial for anyone considering purchasing emerald jewelry. These treatments can greatly impact the appearance, value, and durability of the gemstone, and knowing the specific treatment applied to an emerald can help you make an informed decision. Always ask the seller to disclose any treatments applied to the emerald and if your gut is questioning either an expensive emerald you purchased in the past or if you got a deal that seemed a bit too good to be true, seek certification from a reputable gemological laboratory to confirm the authenticity and quality of your chosen gemstone may be warranted.

Factors to Consider When Buying an Emerald

When you're searching for your perfect emerald, it's vital to take several factors into account to ensure that you're making a well-informed purchase. Here are some key aspects to keep in mind when selecting your emerald:

  • Disclosure Requirements: As I’ve said many times in this post, disclosure is everything! Most of these treatments are difficult to detect, and require special tools, and a trained eye to properly evaluate. Always ensure that the seller provides disclosure for any treatments applied to the emerald. A reputable jeweler, should be upfront about any enhancements and provide the necessary documentation.

  • Certification: To guarantee the authenticity and quality of the emerald, consider purchasing a gemstone that has been certified by a reputable gemological laboratory, such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or the American Gemological Society (AGS). These certifications provide detailed information about the gemstone, including treatments, color, clarity, cut, and carat weight.

  • Treatment Impact on Value: Be aware that the type of treatment applied to an emerald can significantly influence its value. Generally, untreated or minimally treated emeralds are significantly more valuable than those that have undergone extensive treatments.

  • Overall Quality: When assessing an emerald, pay close attention to the color of the stone, the clarity/inclusions in the stone, and the overall look, to help ensure that you're selecting a high-quality gemstone.

  • Price: Are treated emeralds less valuable? Emerald prices can vary widely depending on factors such as color, clarity, size, and treatment. Comparing prices from various sources will help ensure that you're getting a fair deal. And remember that if an emerald's price seems too good to be true, it may indicate lower quality or undisclosed treatments.

  • Reputation of the Jeweler: Last but not least, always take the jeweler's reputation into consideration. A trustworthy jeweler should be transparent about the gemstone's characteristics, treatments, and pricing. Take the time to ensure you are working with a reliable professional, research the jeweler's reputation, read customer reviews, and ask for recommendations from friends or family.

By considering these factors, you can confidently navigate the process of purchasing an emerald and feel secure in the knowledge that you've made an informed decision.

Caring for Treated Emeralds

Treated emeralds require special attention, so proper care and maintenance are crucial to preserving the beauty and value of your treated emerald jewelry. Here are some guidelines to help you care for your treated emeralds effectively:

  • Cleaning: Gently wipe your treated emerald with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove dirt and oils. Instead of using ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, or harsh chemicals, which could damage the gemstone and deteriorate its treatments, opt for a mild soap and warm water solution. Rinse the emerald thoroughly after cleaning to remove any soap residue, and dry it carefully using a soft cloth or by letting it air dry on a clean towel.

  • Avoiding Chemicals and Heat: Treated emeralds can be sensitive to chemicals and heat, which can cause damage and/or alter the gemstone's appearance. Keep your emerald jewelry away from household chemicals, cosmetics, and perfumes, and remove it before swimming in chlorinated pools. Additionally, avoid exposing your emerald to extreme heat, such as being in close proximity to heating elements, as this can potentially damage the stone or cause treatments to break down.

  • Storage: When storing your treated emerald jewelry, take care to prevent scratches and other damage. Keep your emerald in a separate, soft-lined compartment in your jewelry box, or store it in a padded pouch. This will help to protect the gemstone from coming into contact with other jewelry items that could scratch or damage it.

  • Handling: Emeralds, especially those that have undergone treatments, can be susceptible to damage from sudden changes in temperature or impact. When wearing your emerald jewelry, be mindful of your surroundings and avoid activities that may expose the gemstone to sudden, large, temperature changes, knocks, or abrasions.

By adhering to these care guidelines, you can ensure that your treated emerald jewelry remains beautiful and well-maintained for years to come. Proper care not only preserves the gemstone's appearance but also safeguards your investment in a stunning piece of emerald jewelry.
